Is blogging dead? Does anyone read blogs anymore. Can a blog, actually still be profitable. If you are thinking about starting a blog that these questions have more than likely cross your mind right. Blogging is over a decade old now out of 1.7 billion websites in the world there are over 500 million blogs. In this article I’m giving you the honest answers to these questions so that you can know, once and for all. Blogging is still worth it.
So let’s get right into it is blogging dead will blogs die in 2021 blogging definitely isn’t dead, but but but but some of the old practices and strategies are dying and dying fast. In fact, there are many that are dead already. So what does this mean if you want to start and grow a blog that makes money. It simply means that you need to educate yourself on what does and does not work anymore, and keep up to date on these changes every successful business has to adapt, and your blogging business will have to as well.
So, let’s talk about what’s not working anymore and what you need to do instead. The first a blogging practice that is dying out. Actually, I’d say it’s already dead, is personal blogs, also known as Dark bombs. So, when blogging first came on the scene of personal blogs were big, you could set up your blog document your daily adventures your struggles what you ate for lunch basically whatever you felt like if you were entertaining enough, then you can easily grow a following of devoted fans, and I have to do this type of blog is officially dead now because there’s a much easier and more popular way to be entertained by your favorite influencers.
So, think about your own actions, where do you go get the latest updates on family or friends celebrities, social media, right, the insane growth of social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, over the past decade has just squashed the appeal of personal blogs like there’s no need for people are now quickly and conveniently being entertained on social media platforms that are, they’re just a part of everyone’s daily life, so there is no need to visit a blog to get the latest update.
Now this isn’t to say that you can’t start a personal blog for your own enjoyment if you want, but if you do want to make money with your blog. Talking about your life and what you had for breakfast this morning, won’t bring traffic to your site, or put cash in your pocket.
The second blogging strategy practices, dying out is blogging about anything and everything. So people are not missing blogs for entertainment purposes, like they used to then, what are they visiting blogs for the answer is really simple, knowledge, people are looking to be educated on a specific topic, they are visiting blogs to help them solve problems and to educate themselves further. So your blog, should be a resource for a specific group of people looking for specific information.
You really have to focus on a very defined niche to become a go to expert in that area. So blogging about anything and everything is a surefire way to kill your chances of a Profitable Blog in 2021 and beyond. So for example if you’re a woman. We, with a keto diet. Which of the following blogs, would you choose to wow so blog number one has some information about keto makes them with blog posts about parenting, some personal finance and fashion or blog number two which here’s specifically to women who want to lose weight on keto but have no idea where to start. Can you see how option number to speak directly to you as a woman looking for information on this subject, it immediately identifies your pain plan establishes action. So this blog run were to understand you, the site has one focus, and it immediately then positions itself as an authority on the subject matter. And you can even niche down even further to a specific age group of women as well. Really invention down, and just more than on your ideal client.
Now I’ve already mentioned that there are over 500 million blogs in the world and 1.7 billion websites. Now not all of these blogs are active, but this is an impressive number right and it just proves that if you want to stand out and be successful and make money with your blog, you need to get very specific.
So, this means if you’re passionate and knowledgeable on a subject like parenting, and you want to start a blog on this topic, then you’re going to need to get a lot more specific than just raising kids, do you want to focus on breastfeeding for new moms, maybe toddler crafts and activities or raising children with autism maybe overseas adoption or homeschooling.
So the first step is to do some market research to make sure there is a demand for your niche. And then once you choose a specific area you need to strictly stick to becoming an expert on that topic for the foreseeable future.
So if you decide you’re going to focus on breastfeeding for new moms don’t go throwing in information about preschoolers or a blog post about family friendly crafts here there okay this will only confuse your audience, and just really decrease your authority, you need to write content that is specific, that your specific audience is looking for and just be relentlessly helpful for them.
Moving unto Number Three, Focusing on quantity of blog posts.
The idea that more blog posts, equal more success is just not relevant anymore. In the early years of blogging, there was a lot less competition so the more you posted the more traffic and visibility that you received, but this is no longer the case.
So today, creating high quality content on a consistent schedule is so much better than churning out more frequent content of lesser value. So, it’s typically better to focus on, let’s say two really in depth helpful blog posts a month than four or five unexceptional posts that provide really little long term value.
I teach my students to begin with, adding pillar content to their blogs and pillar content, also known as evergreen or Cornerstone content is in depth and very informative content that has a really long lifespan it greatly serves your audience. So when you are first starting out I definitely understand that it may take some time to find your voice and create those 2500 word blog posts that Google tends to favor.
This is okay. Just remain focused on providing high quality content instead of worrying about your workout. You can, you can always go back and update or add both over time and in fact, it is recommended to keep your posts up to date and relevant for search engine optimization purposes.
The fourth thing that is no longer working in blogging is not incorporating a video and or audio content on your blog.
I know you may not like hearing this, but it’s the new reality, you must incorporate other forms of content on your blog to stay competitive. And you may be asking, Does anyone really read blogs anymore. Yes, Three out of four internet users and still read blogs. However, people consume information in many different ways. Some still like to sit and read blog posts, but more and more people are choosing to learn through video, audio, or all three mediums.
So if you are not providing multiple ways for your audience to consume your information and build a connection with you, then you’re missing out on people and you’re already falling behind your competition. Yes, it is an extra step but that is one that’s going to pay off in the long run because video and even audio allows your audience to develop that know like and trust relationship with you, much more quickly, and this familiarity and trust is essential to build with your audience before they’re going to want to spend any money with you.
Now, this doesn’t mean that you need to recreate new content for each medium, you can repurpose a blog post and make it into a video or audio clips are used as a podcast episode, or if you’re better at speaking of writing, you can record a video first or even your audio and then transcribe it into a blog post or even use a service like rev.com to do it for you.
Now I personally consume information in all three ways, and I know a lot of my audience does as well. So, this is something I am starting to focus on more and if you want to as well if you want to stay relevant and make money from blogging long term.
And the fifth thing that is no longer working. If you are trying to build a profitable blogging business.
In this day and age is a blogging with no way to reach your audience, after they leave your site. So let me give you a scary statistic Okay, typically 75% of your blog visitors will never return. This means that you have to find a way to keep in touch with these visitors after they leave, so that they can no more value what you have to offer.
You need to give them an incentive to stay connected with you. And the best way to do this is by offering an enticing freebie of some type, that they will give them a quick win in exchange for their email address. So gone are those days of providing a box for someone to sign up for your newsletter right. This strategy died so long ago, people’s inboxes are flooded with emails and so there’s so much more selective about who they’re giving their email address to these days. So you need to have a really attractive offer for them to hand over to one to hand over their email address to you. Now a freebie can be in the form of a cheat sheet, Maybe a checklist a workbook and ebook a printable something like that, and these things can easily be made in the free program like Canva.
If you don’t have a way to collect these emails after someone signs up for your freebie. Then, I highly recommend checking out ConvertKit ConvertKit is the best email marketing provider, in my humble opinion, it’s who I have used and love for over four years now and they have just made it even better by starting to offer a free plan this past year so if you’re, if you’re new you don’t have a lot of money. This is a great place to start.
Contact Me. Okay, so as we start to wrap this up, can a blog, actually still be profitable in 2021 and beyond 100% Absolutely, if you do it the right way. So first of all you need to throw out the blogging strategies in the past that we discussed that are no longer working and focus solely on becoming the expert in your niche.
And to do this, you need to choose a niche that interests you and that you have life experience and knowledge in, so your blog should be a resource for a specific group of people looking for specific information. Second, you need to determine what you know that the beginner or person a few steps behind you might not know, and then consistently provide helpful high quality information related to that specific topic.
You don’t have to have a specific degree or a certain amount of experience before you can start. Third, you need to make sure that you get your blog and business strategy set up the right way so that you can create a solid blogging, business began to monetize your blog, and actually turn your passion into prominence.
